Landscapes after the battle

Over time battles have evolved. The context and techniques have changed. Battlefields as well.

These one day battles, linked by a chain of causalities, cover the period 1066 to 1918.

Forty-six battlefields across ten countries in Europe.

Each photo is taken at a height of 210 cm, which corresponds to the median viewpoint between a foot soldier and a mounted knight.

The images are not only a topographic representation. They can be distinguished from traditional landscape photography by the particular treatment of the subject matter.

The aim is to bridge the present and the past, where one's perception is left to a large extent to interpretation. Hence the importance of naming, giving an identity to the image.

When viewing these photos the reader/spectator expects a meaning to arise from these bucolic scenes, these innocent panoramas that is not immediately forthcoming. A key is needed. Once the name of the site is given, an ethereal link is created that transcends time.

The series is a graphic presentation of nameless terrain onto which we juxtapose our mental interpretation of that same terrain. Viewers pass from an image with no memory to the image of memory.
